If a person finds himself having trouble falling or staying asleep, there are plenty or remedies to try to correct the problem. Your glass of warm milk might go well with a bedtime snack. A light snack can fight off hunger pangs, which can strike during the night and interrupt sleep. Better yet, eating an evening meal rich in high-glycemic-index carbohydrates can encourage falling asleep faster.

If milk is not your cup of tea, then try tea itself. Herbal teas containing ingredients such as chamomile, lemon balm and passion flower. Some tea blends are made specifically to promote sleep.  However, drinking before bedtime can mean trips to the restroom, which interrupt your sleep as night.

One universally recommended Over the Counter Sleeping Aid is to avoid caffeine completely. Caffeine can be found in coffee, soda, chocolate and even tea so it is more difficult to do without caffeine than it might originally seem. If you cannot function in the morning without a cup of coffee, only drink it in the morning. Remember, as we age, our bodies are less equipped to expel caffeine; while we may have been able to drink 4 cups of coffee in our twenties, we may not be able to handle as much now.

Doctors have suggested one serving of alcohol a day as a heart healthy habit. Researches now also believe that a nighttime drink, also known at a nightcap, can be a helpful sleeping remedy. It is important to keep in mind that too much alcohol can have the opposite affect so while one glass of wine may help you fall asleep, more can cause you to wake up in the middle of the night.
