Although Kava, chamomile and valerian may be the most commonly used herbal sleeping aids, there are several other lesser-known methods, which may work better for some individuals. Many of these herbal remedies use essential oils, or concentrated aromatic oils derived plants. Essential oils can often be applied topically to the skin and some individuals even sprinkle these liquids on their pillows and bed linens.

Lavender is one herbal sleep remedy, the essential oil of which has been used in aromatherapy for years to promote healthy sleep. Inhalation of this herb can induce clam before bedtime, which is similar to some tranquilizers. It can also be ingested in the form of tea or the oil can be applied topically.

The California poppy has also been used to treat sleep problems effectively. Similar to the Opium poppy, although without morphine, the California poppy is an ingredient in many over the counter sleeping aids and is produced in liquid form. This mild sedative has few side effects but should not be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women or children.

Another herbal sleeping aid is Pulsatilla, which is derived from the poisonous pasqueflower, or windflower. This sleep aid is often used, especially in homoeopathic medicine, to treat insomnia due to anxiety.

Nux vomica is an herbal sleeping aid, which is often used to treat hangovers, but is also effective in treating sleeping troubles due to indigestion and is especially effective as combating the effects of caffeine, alcohol or other stimulants, which can cause sleeplessness.

Although it might seem to do, the opposite coffee, from the coffee plant, can aid sleep in tiny amounts. The homeopathic extract of this herb can also work to neutralize effects of caffeine, which is found in chocolate, coffee, and soda as well as other foods. In fact, it enables the mind and nervous system to relax.

Other herbs that are not as widely used to treat insomnia include peppermint, which has a relaxing affect and reduces indigestion. Sage is an herbal sleep remedy which sooths and eases depression and can be had in tea or added to food. Siberian ginseng also treats depression as well as chronic tiredness, which can both cause insomnia. Jasmine is also used as a milder form of herbal sleep aid than chamomile and even children can use it in tea or as an ingredient of medication.
