Herbal Sleep Remedies
Suffers of insomnia may find themselves having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Small noises and movements can wake them easily and make it difficult to fall back asleep. Insomnia and other sleep disorders can cause a person to feel anxious or be sensitive to temperature at night, which can also be a deterrent to quality sleep. Often, this results in a person who is sleepy during the day and may even result in napping. However, if you suffer from a sleep disorder, taking a nap during the day can actually do further damage. Instead, there are many herbal remedies, which are available in tea and pill forms, and some herbal remedies are even the basis for over the counter sleep medications.
Valerian is one of the most common herbal ingredients of sleep remedies because it relaxes nerves and muscles, providing a deeper, more quality sleep. It is the basis for some over the counter medications and is available in capsule, tea, liquid and tablet forms. Although there is no hard evidence about the active ingredient of this plant root, most agree that it is the best natural sleep remedy. Valerian should not be used for longer than three months at a time and may have an initial calming affect on some people, only to stimulate them later.
Chamomile is another herbal sleep remedy, which is commonly used. Of course, it is available as a tea made of the dried leaves, which can be taken about 30 minutes before bedtime as a sleep aid and does not need to be used routinely to be effective. However, some chamomile users place the leaves in a sachet beneath their pillow as well. Unfortunately, some persons who suffer from hay fever may have a reaction to this herb.
Kava is also frequently used as an herbal sleep remedy, specifically for insomnia caused by anxiety. Although not approved by the F and Drug Administration, research does indicate that the kava root can reduce anxiety, therefore eliminating anxiety-related insomnia. This is done through kavalactones in the plant. However, kava users should beware the possibly link with liver toxicity including liver failure and hepatitis.
